The name itself comes from The Aztecs where āhuacamolli could be translated as avocado sauce. Avocados themselves have been cultivated by humans for more than 10,000 years and it’s believed that they were first grown in South Central Mexico. Around a century ago, they were often called the alligator pear; and imports to the US were banned until around 30 years ago.
